Microcement: cost, pros and cons (an honest guide)

• Renovation with no building work: no chiselling, no rubble, no dust, and the home liveable in just a few days.
• Visual continuity: a single seamless surface across floor, wall and bathroom creates a sense of space.
• Low thickness and low weight: 2-3 mm that barely raise the level and do not overload the structure.
• Versatility: it works on floors, walls, bathrooms, kitchens, stairs, terraces and furniture.
• Easy to clean and hygienic: with no joints, it does not trap dirt or mould.

Being honest is part of doing our job well. Microcement is an excellent material, but it is neither perfect nor right for everyone. These are its real limitations:

• It depends on the applicator: poor sealing or badly executed layers lead to staining or premature wear. It is not DIY.
• It needs sealer maintenance: every so often the protective coat should be renewed, especially in heavily used areas.
• It is sensitive to aggressive products: acids, concentrated bleach or metal scourers can damage the finish if it is not protected.
• Higher upfront cost than painting or vinyl: it pays back through durability, but the initial outlay is larger.
• The final tone can vary slightly from the sample, because of its handcrafted character.

1. The surface to be coated (floor, wall, bathroom, kitchen...) and the square metres.
2. The condition of the substrate: repairs, levelling or reinforcement push the cost up.
3. The chosen finish: a metallic or special effect needs more labour than a smooth one.
4. Access and the complexity of the area (corners, steps, shower trays).

In our experience, it pays off when you want to renovate with no building work, gain visual continuity and a design finish that lasts for years, and you trust the application to a professional. It does not pay off as a cheap DIY fix, nor for anyone expecting an indestructible material with zero maintenance. Assessed realistically, it is one of the best refurbishments around for design-to-durability value.
